welcome to stress 3 direct

Background to our service

Workplace stress is still causing huge problems. However, fortunately it is now becoming widely understood that it pays to take a preventative approach to its adverse effects. Consequently, many organisations now take their legal duties seriously and carry out a Stress Risk Assessment (SRA) for all employees. We have been part of this process, working with several organisations and individuals to reduce stress and increase wellbeing.

The survey categories – The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have developed something called management standards. These are six areas within the workplace stress has been associated or in other words the six main sources of stress at work.

These are:

  • Demands - this includes issues such as workload, work patterns and the work environment.
  • Control - how much say the person has in the way they do their work.
  • Support - this is split further into peer and managers support. It includes the encouragement, sponsorship and resources provided by the organisation, line management and colleagues.
  • Relationships - this includes promoting positive working to avoid conflict and dealing with unacceptable behaviour.
  • Role - whether people understand their role within the organisation and whether the organisation ensures that they do not have conflicting roles.
  • Change - how organisational change (large or small) is managed and communicated in the organisation

With well developed categories (management standards) over many years of research and extensive funding from the health and safety executive for employers, it was important to use such knowledge when writing a survey for learners. To keep the integrity of the data collected and a way of interpreting the results we broke the appropriate learner questions down to fit into these categories. It is possible to use more than these categories if beneficial.
